By: Susan Harper
On Sunday November 8th, climbers traveling near and far united at the heart of WVU’s Student Recreation Center rock wall for the
2015 top rope competition.
Thanks to weeks of secret route setting designed by some of WVU’s finest climbing wall staff, the wall was devised specifically for the weekend’s event. Approximately 35 routes were set. Difficulties ranged from 5.5 for beginners to 5.12 for advanced climbers.
With tough opponent’s reigning from surrounding regional schools including Youngstown State, Pitt, Frostburg, and Akron, the event was by no means an easy match for anyone.
After a long day of sweat, chalk and impressive competition, the time arose to name the winners. A table full of prizes generously donated by Pathfinder, NEON Gear, Coopers Rock and other local outdoors affiliates certainly made for a nail-biting announcement.
Jessi Truelove took 1st place in the women’s competition and Jake Tyo in the men’s competition. Climbing goodies were also given to the second and third place winners.
Winner or not, every climber that competed in WVU’s 2015 top-rope competition gave it their all and had a blast while doing so.
